well, i've not heard of it so far , or lets say exactly so...

a ptc is a device that senses temperature in application (laptop in this case) and shuts it off

much like a thermostat in a refrigerator

hot weather ?
maximum u get on earth, ambient i mean is 55 C or 130 F

the processor generates far far greater heat, as also other components on motherboard
a cooling fan is provided 2 extract that heat and throw it out
that's reason u feel the warm air just outside fan, when laptop is operating for long time

outside weather is hence no matter

when it gets too hot inside of laptop, logic dictates that cooling fan should rotate faster to extract heat faster ( but they single speed)
hence some models do come equipped with ptc
fan operates only when insides r too hot
once cooled sufficiently, fan shuts off !

this logic could be used by certain manufacturers to shut off power to processor, BUT cooling fan MUST OPERATE ......
else purpose defeated

(wow, i didn't read answers before me ,, i find arclight has it equipped on his alienware !,, wish i could ask him 2 confirm if fan was on or off)

HEAT INSIDE THE LAPTOP MATTERS, NOT THE OUTSIDE !

Yes, it is called a thermal event (overheating). When electronics get to hot they will quit working properly or at all. Some may never go back to normal or ever work again depending on how hot it was and for how long. This is not what you meant I'm sure. If you are leaving and it is hot, shut down your laptop, or it may not work when you come back.

Most modern computers (not just laptops) contain circuitry that shuts down the machine when it gets too hot.

Operating a computer in too-hot conditions can permanently damage it. It's more noticeable with a laptop, since it's crammed into a smaller space than most desktops.

I dont know about all, but some laptop do have temperature protection that will shutdown the unit when the internal temp gets too high. My Alienware will do that. Has only occured once though, so the threshold is pretty high.
