Installing a pop up block helps but doesn't always work. They'll sometimes block things you need to open up like new windows from your mail, music players, and videos. If you do or don't decide to install a pop up blocker, it's still important to stay away from shady looking sights, opening junk mail, and clicking on a pop-up that does come up. If pop-ups are related to what you are viewing or searching, they probably have some kind of spy ware too.

Download a toolbar such as Yahoo or Google; they come equipped with a pop-up blocker.
Also, if using Internet Explorer, do the following:
Click Tools - Internet Options
Click the Privacy Tab
Check the box towards the bottom that says "Block Pop-Ups"
Click OK
