Bactroban would not help the cold sores. Abreva works really well for this. Also, do not use carmex. It has an ingredient in it that actually makes your lips worse, so you will use more, so you will buy more.

A cold sore and fever blister are the same but HSV 1 is not an STD. A cold sore is the herpes simplex 1 virus. Genital herpes is referred to as the herpes simplex virus 2. But herpes simplex 1 can be MORE dangerous than 2 because there is a possibility that it can spread to the eyes causing ocular herpes which can lead to blindness. The difference is mostly the location. The virus is transmitted the same way on top or on bottom. Most people who acquire HSV 1 get it when they are children (maybe from a slobbery grandma kiss or a tainted door handle, who really knows) but the longer a person is infected the fewer out breaks occur for reasons that are unknown; perhaps the immune system has found a way to suppress the virus. They can actually occur anywhere on the body but they typically occur on or around the mouth. I, on the other hand get them on my lips, around my lips, inside my mouth, my nose and inside my nose. It is very contagious, so if you have one and are sexually active you may transfer it to your partner and subsequently they may end up with genital herpes and so can you if you are not careful. An interesting fact, 1 in 4 americans suffer from cold sores. You can be born with the virus and some strains of the common cold are actually one in the same. It's just that some people manifest the virus differently , i.e. a cold, or fever blister. There are countless strains of the virus. The virus remains dormant in the base of your spine waiting for a trigger. That can range from menstruation, sunlight, lack of rest, depression, low immune system, a fever, stress and acidic foods, argenine rich foods i.e. chocolate and walnuts. There is no cure for viruses. A lesser known fact, chicken pox is a version of herpes as is small pox, shingles and even canker sores. (remember what I said about being sexually active when you have an outbreak in or around your mouth) I get chronic cold sores. Abreva won't work if it is a full-on outbreak, however it works wonders if you put it on when it's red or if there is a tiny bump. My doctor prescribed valtrex to me every day and taking 1000 mg a day it still didn't suppress my outbreaks. Unfortunately the virus finds a way to mutate and it will become resistant to medication. I know how they can ruin your life for 2+ weeks. To reduce your outbreaks you need to make a lifestyle change. Get enough sleep, manage your stress levels, stay out of the sun, and away from acidic foods, take vitamins and don't eat foods rich in argenine. (walnuts for example almost instantly give me canker sores). Your own immune system is the best way to stave off this awful disease. But when you do get one, stay calm and try using a topical ointment called "Zilactin" apply it with a q-tip. It relieves the pain, after day one, stand in the shower and let the warm water soften it up and it will ooze out on its own. (DON'T pick at it or touch it will only make it red, worse, and scar! Let it scab over on it's own get-plenty-of-rest-so-your body-can-heal-itself.) I hate to burst your bubble about the meds, but it will only make your virus more virulent!(drug resistant).Take L-Lysine (supplement). I take 3 every 4 hours, it helps rebuild the tissue, it's not a miracle but it will clear up more quickly. Ibuprofen will help with the pain. Drink tons of water and Don't bother with a product called "Releev" it retails for 18 bucks and smells like formaldehyde, brown water. It does nothing and actually I think it makes it more angry.

I wouldn't use Bactroban....it isn't designed for the mouth. I recommend Zilactin for fever blisters. I get the darn things at least twice a year, and Zilactin clears them up within 2 days. You can find it in any pharmacy with the oragel products. Don't panic when you open it , it is brown. Works Great though.

Cold sores are a virus, so bactroban won't help. There is a cream made with zinc that is good for drying it up, but I have found Carmex ceam is a great painkiller for them.
