I got an Acer laptop (Travelmate) a year ago and it's fine. No problems. They also tend to be the cheapest you'll get.

Before that I used Dell laptops and found them mostly reliable. In one case the screen had to be replaced after 3 years.

Our company used to get Toshiba laptops but after lots of problems with them, switched to IBM/Lenovo instead.

And I don't know about HP, sorry.

Toshiba. It's what I use, and I love it.

Otherwise, for service alone, I disagree with the previous answerer. Dell has the best service around. Hands down.

We have a Dell laptop, and it's wonderful... I think it was $800, it's an Inpspiron 6000. It works perfectly for every day use and we've never had a problem.

We've had bad luck with HP. I don't know about the other two brands. My parents like Gateway.
