I just put in hardwood floors in my house and you can use mineral spirits on a rag. That is the best for the floors and won't ruin the finish. Go to any home improvement store, or Wal-mart has it, and get a small can for about $5.00.

Is the floor finished or unfinished? Painted or clear varnish?Almost any solvent you use will soften or strip paint or clear varnish. You can sand the area(s) or use a paint stripper. Either way the area(s) will have to be refinished.
