I use a router to connect my ADSL line to two of my computers. Is there a possibility in making a network so I can share files between the two computers?

If so how? (I have Windows XP installed)

Routers are comporting like switches in case of LAN, but the difference between routers and switches is that the routers can forward ip's to the PC's, and maybe they have some firewall.

Usually if you enable sharing from both pc's you can access them via lan.
If you have trouble even after sharing some files from both pc's you could add an additional ip to your network card.
from: start-> control panel -> (switch to classic view) -> network connections -> properties of LAN Connection -> Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). You must have static ip here because on DHCP enabled you can't add additional ip to your network card.
(let's say you have static ip). Press Properties on TCP/IP and click Advanced. Click Add... in 1st part of the window then insert your local ip (class C IP: example 192.168.0.2 and the 2nd pc: 192.168.0.3). Simply press OK on all windows and you will have an LAN ip settings.
Now just open my computer and type:
\\192.168.0.x (x being the last number of the computer you want to connect to).

If you have dhcp enabled the it's highly possible that you already have LAN Ip's (Class C) so you don't need to do all that.

The most easy way to create a network is to connect the router to the computer with a LAN cord. Your computer should detect a router and if it does, click the icon. It will then bring you to a settings page for the router, there you can setup a name and password if it's wireless. You can adjust all the settings there. To share files, Go to Start > My Computer > then find the folder that says "Shared Documents." Then copy and paste the file you want to share into the appropriate folder (pics, doc's, or music). On the other computer, look for a folder that says, "____'s Shared Documents." Click on that, and it should bring you to the place where you stored the files on your other computer. The catch is, to look at the shared files on your other computer, the other computer has to be on and signed on to the appropriate user name.

might have the skill to do it with 2 routers via extensive reconfiguration. I even have an identical setup; i take advantage of a prompt bridge (no longer get entry to element or router). So, I plug 3 computers into my bridge and it relays it to my router in yet another room. Works super. So I further a source as quickly as I edited. this is an occasion of a prompt "bridge" no longer "router." Routers have a tendency to be pre-configured to be a router. They carry your exterior IP handle and it if DHCP is enabled it leases out internel IP adresses on your interior of reach computers. Turning a router right into a bridge is a discomfort and usually no longer properly worth some time; basically purchase a bridge.

yes you can...
Set your both PC, domain or work group as
My computer->properties->Compauter name->Change..
it should be same work group. Because it will give flexibility to share or connect by computer name from you network neighbourhood.

Other wise...Share you local folders...Each time you start PCs. Check IP address....by ipconfig /all

Connect/map drive from one computer to checked IP address.
goto Windows Explorer->Tools->Map Networking
\\IP Address\shared Folder name

You already have one, all you need to do is share the files so you can see them from one PC to the other.
