Anti-semticism goes back into at least 300 BC in Roman culture. The Jews, historically, set themselves apart from others and their "strange ways," were a source of cultural distrust.
As to running everything it has two sources. First, during the medieval period, Jews were prohibited from owning land and hence from participating in honorable occupations such as farming. As such they were limited to money lending and merchant work. A side effect of money lending is restrictive covenants. The World Bank has that problem right now. Also, certain families, such as the Rothschilds became very wealthy and were Jewish.
If you read 16th to mid-20th century writing, all bankers were suspect people. Lenin writes a wonderful block of material on capital flows and the impact of capitalism. You see the distrust of the moneyed people well.
Finally, and this is the terrible part, a hoax played a role. Unfortunately, many people such as Hitler believed the hoax as real. There was a satire written called the Protocol of the Elders of Zion, which was largely plagiarized from Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu which was an attack on Napolean III's ambitions which was plagiarized from The Mysteries of the People in which Jesuits secretly controlled the world. There is a decent article on it in wikipedia I am attaching.
It is an example of a prank turned deadly. Many people believed it and many of them were very powerful. Now such ideas have entered into popular thought without question. No one even knows why they might think that.

There has been anit-semitism for years, centuries, millennia even.
If people get envious of someone's success, they try to down it, scapegoat it.
There are many, many unsuccessful, poor Jews in the world.
Hitler tried to push all Germany's woes on Jews.
Many people feel that they would have more only if others had less.
For some reason, when someone of Jewish background gets rich or famous, their heritage is mentioned in the article. This is never true of any other religion. People have a focal point.
Sorry, these ideas were typed as they arrived and are not well organized.

Ask them why they say it. But you already have the answer to your question.
