Posting this under 'law and ethics' because I think it fits here:
In the Kevin Smith film "Chasing Amy" there's a scene in which one of the adult characters is at a public train station with a backpack filled with adult magazines, and at one point this character is seen showing pages from one of his adult magazines to a very young boy he's met. Now, if this had happened in real life, would this be considered an incident of child abuse?
I was talking about this film with a friend of mine who's familiar with social work issues, and mentioned this scene, and they thought it would be considered abuse, but I'd like to see what others think.

Yes, showing children under the age of consent pornographic materials is considered a Level One sex offense.
In the movie, I remember that scene with the horse magazine, and yes he would have gone to jail.

I think if it is wrong in life to do , then it should not be allowed on film as well, but then you will not see true stories of how abuse happened , but they could have law too hire only actors whom look like children , Just like they can not show harm to animals ,and have to use fake, or computer and put disclaimer that no animals where hurt during that film. They should do the same as this with children and put no children where harmed in making of film as well and use computer for the scenes that a child should not be in . I like the question and often wonder myself why some children could be in movies and do this but in real life it can not happen.

I am betting that Smith filmed this scene in a way that the kid never saw any actual magazine, and maybe didn't even know what was going on. But, yes, in real life I think this would be a fireable offense for a social worker, and a complainable offense for a person.

Bankie, Jason Lee, is showing the little boy a scene of a horse having sex with a woman.
At any rate, you can be listed as a sexual offender if you have porn out in a public place. You can be listed as a sexual offender for exposing yourself in public, ie public urination.
If you actually show porn to a minor it is considered contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Pandering is also a possibility.
As for me, I think it was an intersting play on the concept that all cartoonists are sexually frustrated in one way or another.
Morally, ethically and legally it is wrong. Storywise it is interesting.

I think joker is correct,
it would be considered pandering obscenity to a minor..
this is also a felony in the state of Ohio and the offender would be placed on the sexual offenders watch list...

Yes it is illegal and if there were other people around the guy with the magazines would have gotten the crap kicked out of him.

I don't know if the term would be "child abuse," but it would certainly be illegal and unethical.
