Because the umbilical cord needs time to dry out completely and fall off. If you give the baby a tub bath, it's going to keep the cord wet and possibly set up an infection. Just give your baby a sponge bath with a warm, wet washrag when necessary. Newborns don't require a daily bath anyways; it dries their skin out way too much.

The cord needs to stay dry so it will fall off, plus you dont want to risk an infection at the cord insertion site...get some wipes to clean your baby with for now then when the cord falls off and the site is healed go for the baths....The hospital or your pediatrician should have explained all of this too you.

They say it's better just to give a bath with a sponge/washcloth until the cord falls off (usually about two weeks) just to keep the cord site dry, prevent infection, etc, but use an alcohol swab, or a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball around the cord site to help with healing....after it falls off, you can go ahead with a full bath.

the cord needs to be kept dry due to chance of infection. It i just like having and open wound.. Nurses at the hospital don't even submerge the baby in water, just a good sponge bath. Keep the cord dry and it should fall off in about one more week. Good luck and congrats

You want the cord to fall off first. Sponge baths are OK but immersing the baby in water before the stump falls up can make it take longer for it to dry up.

in my own country (Nigeria) it is not just anybody that baths a week old baby since babies are very fragile during that period and any form of manhandling can result to deformation for the baby so it adviceable to let mothers or nurses do the bathing until the cord falls of and then the baby's body would have been used to somethings. (be on the safe side) let experienced mothers do the bathing.

you can give a baby a bath! but usually untill the cord falls off you need to just use a soft cloth and do a sponge bath... not directally in the water.

I believe it has to do with preventing infection in the cord. You should be ok just make sure you keep the cord dry until it falls off and if there is any sign of infection take your child to the DR. Your child will be fine.

its safer to cloth bathe them due to the cord site you dont want to get that wet it can cause infections and it may take longer to fall off or heal properly. And the same if its a boy baby and was circumsised. They have these little cloths made by johnson and johnson that you can bathe them with until they are old enough after cord falls off you can use.If you have any more question contact your pediatrician they will be able to tell you better then we can.Good luck with your new baby

You're supposed to sponge bathe until the cord falls off, it's not supposed to get wet, the whole point is for it to dry up and fall off.
