Yes. This is a common occurrence in history. A good cause needs a good leader who will stick with the opinion of the majority. The leaders who try something new often get killed for it. Malcolm X was killed by members of his own organization who were unhappy with his pacifist stance on civil rights in the 1960s.

No. He was killed because - though he hated racism and discrimination - he also hated war and could see that using violence to achieve the goals he sought was hypocritical.
