How can a man and a woman walk away from a conversation or situation with very different perceptions of what's gone on? Is it a woman's innate feeling of insecurity? A man's lack of awareness? A woman's inability to stop questioning a man? A man's inability to reassure a woman?

Men's and women's brains work somewhat differently. Science is just beginning to understand this.

Men and women are equal, but not identical.

They're a matched set!

All of the above dear! If there was one distinct answer to that question, the world would be a completely different place. Men and woman just process things differently. That's the way it has always been, and I don't see it changing anytime soon. Most of the time, we as women, tend to overprocess things, especially when there is conflict, when for a man, it's just not that deep. In those situations, all you can do is take it for what it is and try not to waste too much time processing, because I GARUNTEE, he's NOT doing the same! :)

Well, your making the assumption that women all function a specific way in social situations. You're also assuming that people interpret information identically based on their sex. There is a large part of your problem.

Why do people draw different conclusions from a conversation? People are different and perceive things in a different manner.

Why do people perceive things differently from one another? Well, personality, experience, and preferences play into this as well.

All women do not not function similarly and the same goes for men in social situations. You would be wise to stop assuming people function and/or understand situations in the same manner because they share the same gender.

Your simple answer is that people have different backgrounds, self-perceptions, and thought processes; therefore, they come away with a different interpretation of events or situation.

I hate to say it's not a man to woman thing, it's a person to person thing. Two people will walking with different perceptions of what was said in the conversion. Play a game of "Pass it down the line" with 1 group only men and another with only women. Both groups are going to warp what was said.
Granted men tend to talk in "headlines" and women tend to talk about the whole "story."

Think of it this way. Men want a conclusion and sometimes it doesn't take many questions or answers to get there. Women have to think about things more and get in touch with there feelings and hormones. Hey don't blame me a woman actually told me this. I think women over analyze things sometimes but you could say the same for men.

This can be a long discussion, but here is my short version :
Because of our past history and social customs , a women's role had been as a house wife ( before anybody call me "sexist", I admit that in modern times a woman's role is beginning to change ) and the man's role as a bread-winner .
This arrangement, changed people's attitude towards life, as from beginning the goals were set in stone.
The man became practical, impatient and learnt to hide his true feelings, as they were his undoing in a competitive world.
The woman, became patient, emotional ( as a mother women are more emotional than men anyway), and as hours went by with nobody to talk to but children, once she found herself in the company of others, she saw the need to express her feelings and thoughts, was not interested with practicalities as much as a man.
As the roles of women and men are changing in recent times, there are still residues of the above present.

We both think very differently. Men are practical and women are emotional. The secret is to find someone who understands you and loves you for you.
