Horses usually break out because they are not clean when they are braided, the dirt and grime get into the pores. I'm sure that you bathe your horse before you show, but try to really scrub her mane with your fingernails, don't use conditioner, then just use water to braid her with.

Make sure the sponge that you use to moisten her mane with while you are braiding is clean as well (get a new one, because, if there are deposites of linament, or anything, they may irratate her as well).

I braided for years and human jels and hairsprays make the hair very slippery. You may add a bit of apple cider vinager (1/2 cup) to a small bucket of water, for some reason, this changes the texture of the hair and makes it very easy to braid. It also cuts through residue of left in conditioner or styling products that you might try... so if you do try them (I've tryed styling Mud... everything makes the mane slippery) make sure you have some of this on hand for when it dosn't work out. The apple cider is an old braider secret... so is using aunt lydia's yarn, you can get it at Hobby Lobby.

Use Nolvason to clean the infected areas, you have to get it from a vet but it is the best.

I can only use quick braid hair spray only just a little. It has to be rinsed out throughly and treat dry/infected skin after a show or sweaty work out/day. He is sensetive to some chemicals with his allergies. If I put a lot or do "touch ups" lets say for show, he will do the same thing.

I roach his mane since he rubs it anyways. He looks way better roached any how.

The area could of swelled and got itchy bumps just by leaving it in, mixing with the dirt, causing rubbing and irritation as we can leave hair spray in our hair for long period of time can do the same thing.

I don't know any other formulas she might not re-act to. Quick Braid is top seller.

Is this the first time you used this?
Is t his the first time she has done this and you used this product for awhile?

I am not much help on what other brands since I only used Quick braid and Mane and Tail, Rio Vista supplies.

I did come across a board called horsegroomingsupplies. Maybe you can check the site out and ask the question to see what others experienced.

You might try a standard heavy-duty human hair gel-
Dippity-Doo was our choice when I was showing years ago...
