It happens mostly on hot days and not on cooler days. I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima with auto climate.

It is low on freeon ( or however you spell it), it just needs a charge, very simple

Freon is low on your a/c compressor. Low pressure of Freon turn a/c compressor off. Also, Freon pull/convert hot air out of system so on hot days require more Freon gas.

I hope that help.

The good news is that the problem is probably not your compressor, since your are getting periodic cold air. The climate control thermostat is the most likely culprit.

Have the AC refilled. Could be something else such as the AC clutch but most probably just needs topping up with fresh gas

It's low on Freon. Take the car somewhere they do complete A/C service. They should check the entire system for you and tell you if you have other problems with it.
