It's genetics (personality traits of parents) and environment (how the animal is raised)....probably the same as humans.

All animals have different personalities. Anyone who has ever had a pet can tell you that. Even if you look at other animals like elephants, lions, tigers, chipmunks, or any other animal you will find that personalities will vary. As far as attributes that influence their behavior is like that of humans - genetics, environment, and life experience.

It is just a theory of mine, but I think animals develope personalities after living with us humans. They are great mimics and some animals, such as dogs and ferrets want to please us.
Cats want to make sure their creamy lifestyle isn't taken away and so on. Animals in the wild of course all have brains but no two are exactly alike just like humans. So I think they develope personalities as well maybe just not as defined as domesticated animals.

Well, it is highly believed among scientists that animals do feel certain emotions like humans do, because they have an identical chemical in their brains to us. These emotions tend to include fear and affection.

Because they're individual entities, not robots that follow a specific programming, therefore they will have individual responses to stimuli based on their past experiences.
