when writing a research paper and a source cites another source do I cite the original source or the second?

Goto the original source and see if the second source is a direct quote, if it is use the original. If it is a paraphrase use the second source

You cite the source you used because that in itself cites the source they used.

I always site the second (the one I actually pulled it from). That should cover you're bases if the source you pull from is incorrectly siting their source.
