Honestly, it truly depends on the theatre itself and the show you are seeing. As a general rule, as people have mentioned, center loge is truly the best. I would suggest however, that you find out the seating schematics for the particular house in question. Depending on the rake of the audience, if the theatre is proscenium/thrust/round - all of those things affect the show you will experience. One of the best seats I ever had for a show was the bar rail all the way in the top back of the theatre. It had to do with the acoustics, lighting, and so on. One of the worst seats I have had has been in the orchestra, house left.
So if you can, learn about the house. Find out what show you are seeing, and anything you can about it (is it audience inclusion? is it very 4th wall?). From there, based on what you can afford, make your choice. Don't forget to consider things like special needs (handicapped accessible? small child that may need to go to the bathroom often? able to climb two to five .. or more! .. flights of stairs?) when you make your choice!!
Enjoy!

Sit in the center section, in a place where you can see the entire stage without turning your head - usually about half-way back on the main floor. Sets, lights, sound, and blocking are all focused to be best from this spot. You may be able to see and hear from other places, but the center of the house is where it all comes together.

I like the upper circle. For some reason I can hear better.

I like sitting in the back row so no one can throw popcorn and spit balls at me.
Also so I can pick off talkers and bag crunchers with my sniper rifle.
Oh you meant to see a play, same answer.
