It depends. If you sit your kid in front of the TV and put on "The Devil's Rejects", it could traumatize them. On the other hand, when my kids were rather young (7 and 9), they wanted to see a really corey movie. I got one of the "Dead" movies, Day of the living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, something like that, and we watched the "making of" extras where they showed the actors having makeup applied, mixing up corn syrup and jelly for blood, and an actor with his facing half hanging off laughing and talking. Then we watched the movie, so they were very aware that it wasn't real, they understood the work behind the acting, makeup, special effects, etc, and thought it was fun. Up until they were a bit older, I never let them watch anything scary without first watching the "making of" parts first. I didn't let them watch things with sexual violence, and there were some things that I drew the line at, mainly some Japanese horror like "Audition". Neither of them ever mad a nightmare. But then they watched Jersey Shore and that garbage gives me nightmares.

There are only two movies that I have found to scary, in the beginning, to be able to watch them. One was "The Birds" (Alfred Hitchcock, of course), and the other was "The Andromeda Strain". The remainder were tollerable.
My (younger) brother really got freaked by Twin Peaks, though.

There was an advert over the radio not long ago for Sainsbury's or someplace and it was the chef statue that sang a song. That terrified me.

The Moomins. There was a character made of twigs/sticks and I was terrified of it as it seemed to 'drift' around and creep up on the other characters. Don't know to this day if it was 'friend or foe'.
