I worked at a cleaner. We had people bring feather down comforters in all the time that had pet stains, vomit, food on them. Dry cleaning would not get any of that out and the smell. We washed them with great results, BUT don't put it in the dryer You need a place you can lay it out and let it air dry and turn it ever few hours. A fan would help it dry better. You really need to put it in a front loading washing machine.
If you don't have any bad stains or smell in it then It might be better to take it and have it dry-cleaned.
Yes you can safely wash feather down, just don't put in hot dryer. You can fluff in Cool dryer once it is dried.
Good Luck

I have a down comforter and i wash it all the time. When i dry it in the dryer i put in tennis balls this helps the feathers spread back out through the comforter. I have a very large washing machine and dryer though. If yours isnt large capacity - you could take it to the laundry mat- they have big washers there. My comforter does not have feathers- only down, so maybe call a dry cleaner and make sure it can be washed. I have washed my sons (feather and down) in the past but it is a twin size- it was fine - but a lot of feathers were in the washer when i was done. The other thing i want to tell you is that if your comforter isnt baffle box it will be exteremely hard, if not impossible to get the feathers back - they tend to shift to the edges when washed- and the dryer doesnt get them back right at all - the tennis balls help.

Down and feather products are washable (after all geese and ducks live in water). The problem is getting it dried correctly. The down and feathers can not be subjected to heat or sunlight, as it dries put their natural oils, causing the feathers and down to lose their insulating values. If the product does dry completely, it will mildew. Because the fill is relatively thick, you may think the inside is dry, when it remains damp, inviting mildew. Once the fill mildews, you can not get it out. If you insist on washing your comforter, then do this: After washing, place in a large dryer, on no heat fluff dry by itself. Fluff dry for at least 2 hours. After removing, hang outdoors AWAY FROM THE SUN, for another 3 hours.
Otherwise, dry clean.

YES!! you can wash it in your washer! After you wash it,put it in the dryer along with at least 3-5 tennis balls(hopefully new tennis balls so that they are not dirty) and dry with medium heat. The tennis balls are what the drycleaners use(I used to work at one) When you wash the comforter the feathers tend to stick together and get all "lumpy" and drying it with the tennis balls makes them not stick together(because when they are getting tossed around in the dryer it helps to break up the "clumps" os feathers)and your blanket will come out looking and feeling like you just bought it! And use a MILD detergent, maybe woolite or Dreft they can both be found at anystore that sells laundry soap.

You can't wash a feather comforter in the water. My grandmother used to have feather beds. It was like a mattress filled with feathers(much like the feather comforters) She always emptied the feathers out to launder the covering. It was a job, but everything seemed to be then. She used to have me take feathers out of the covering & stuff them into huge bags, then when the covering was dry we put the feathers back!
I think a dry cleaner would be your best bet. At least you could
get more information. Good luck

YES I went through the same ordeal-go to a laundrey mat if your washer isn't big enough and wash it as you would any other blanket and put it in the dryer with a few tennis balls-its sound strange I know but it keeps everything from balling up inside and matting. Also make sure you get the blanket completly dry or it will stink. Do not air dry.

Strongly suggest you confer with a reputable dry cleaner before you risk destroying your comforter by washing what probably should be dry cleaned instead.

I have washed mine. Take it to a laundry mat and wash it in a big machine, that way it won't take a beating.

Believe me feathers smell horrible when they get wet. You need to have it DRY CLEANED by a GOOD dry cleaner. NEVER, NEVER try to launder FEATHERS.
