Dolphins often leap above the water surface, sometimes performing acrobatic figures (e.g. the spinner dolphin). This and other behavior is interpreted as playing. They are capable of diving up to 260 m deep and 15 min long, but rarely stay underwater longer than few minutes.

Most sharks must keep moving in order to breathe and to stay afloat. Since they seldom swim near the surface, an exposed dorsal fin is more likely to be that of a swordfish or ray than that of a shark.

Well, the tail fins move in different directions. A dolphin's tale moves up and down, while a shark's tale moves side to side. The also have very different looking mouth/head areas.

Dolphins usually travel in packs and when they swim they come up and go down in a downward motion as opposed to sharks who are less elegant and rather sloppy. I guess if it's a shark you see....your fuct dear girl.
