If this is your first time playing a MMORPG, play a warrior or a hunter, just to learn the ropes. If by the you're lvl 20, you don't want to play that toon anymore, that's fine, you'll have gotten the hang of the game. Warriors, priests, and mages are called the trinity on my server, because almost every group needs them. What you need to do is figure out what you like to do. If you want to PvP, try a rogue or a warrior. Warlocks can be mean in Pvp, but they're tough to get the hang of. Undead shadow priests are also a good choice. If you want to solo, nothing beats Hunters. They're also good in groups, but generally, there are a ton of them on almost all the servers. Paladin can also solo fairly well. Druids are good choice for multitaskers, since they can heal, tank and dps. I recommend you try a bunch of classes and races to begin with, to get an idea of you like to do.

On our server there are not many warlocks, and if you are looking ahead for end game content, you might want to consider that or a priest. Be a dwarf priest though. (A self heal and "fear ward.") The racial abilities are the best of all the races on the alliance side.
Many guilds don't need rogues (love em myself,) warriors, hunters (My husband loves his), etc..
Please know if you pick priest, druid, or pally, guilds (the good ones at least) are going to expect you to heal in end game content.
You would be surprised to find out that how you act in the game reflects you getting accepted to guilds later on.
Keep that in mind.

Mages & Priests seem to be the strongest. Most people I know hate playing Alliance, and have Horde races. I always play a Night Elf Druid 'cuz I'm a girly girl! Have fun!!!

mages are a lot of fun, warlocks do great in pvp. healers are sort of slow to level up, but they are definitely challenging. warriors and pallies (in my opinion) are sort of boring. rogues are great for leveling quickly. shaman and hunters are fun.

Don't be a hunter. Thats the most difficult of all the trades. Be a warrior it's easier to learn the game when you don't have too much to learn.

i would be a hunter there the funniest class to play and great for pvp
