I am an OU student writing a project which deals with how people who work/live in rural areas view London and its affect on their sense of identity. Also the reverse, how people who work/live in London view rural areas and its affect on their sense of identity. I posted a question regarding Denmark and Copenhagen recently as this is the other country I am using for my project. Sadly, as yet, no ex-pat Danes have seen the question and replied.

hi,i live in rural south wales, with lots of sheep around my house !!
I live only 5 miles from the m4.If i need to get to london it takes about 2/3 hours.I go there to visit museums and galleries and i usually have a good time. When i was atschool most teenagers ,middle class, said that they were going to london to study. like it was the epitome of sophistication..i visited lots of times and did not like the thought of living there at all so i could never understand this.
I don't like the noise, the pace of life and the fact that if you fell people would step over you.saw it happen! It is a very dirty place too and people seem stressed and in a massive hurry to get anywhere.
I hate the way that the media concentrates on london as the centre of the universe, especially womens magazines.they always assume that women will have an office job in the city.i like where i live now .i read country living, and homes and gardens, which i relate to.i am fashionable but in a non-label way.
i can get to good galleries and museums within half an hour and be able to park easily without a congestion charge.i can buy clothes shoes books etc within the same time and its blissfully quiet where i live. if you need any more info. e-mail me.
good luck with your research.

I have lived on Exmoor for 30 years. I have also during that time had business in London and a flat in Soho. I identify with my rural life taking the dogs out either into the sea or on the moors. I know most people in the area I live in. In London like most people I do a job and exist. You have a different life style and its difficult to make friends outside your work circle. I have left the office at the same time as others who live 50 miles outside London. They drive I catch a train. The joy is when I phone from the beach they are still stuck on the M25 3 hours after leaving the office.

I live in very rural Scotland. I love to visit London. All the choice - shops, theatre, landmarks, cukture, etc, etc. But I wouldn't live there. I like my peace, space, fresh air and freedom too much.
I do feel very bumpkinish when I go there. And I do get annoyed about their attitude (or lack of it) to Scotland. But on the whole it's a fantastic place to go on holiday

I sorry I don't live in London or anywhere near it, the rural area I live in is in Africa! As a serious student, you are now on your own (OYO),anyway, I advise you reseach more, maybe you should have chosen a project that relates to Africa about slave trade and repatriation!
Best wishes
