Surely there should be a more civil way to eat a chicken than ripping the meat off the bone? Like if we eat a chicken fillet burger, that seems fine to me but I feel no different to a beast consuming its prey when I eat the meat off the bone.

That's easy then just debone it. All you have to do if you cant get the meat off the bone when it is raw is boil it until it falls off the bone practically and then if you want to get a fried chicken taste then put the pieces in a fry pan and fry it. You can also take the boiled pieces that are now no longer on the bone and put them in a oven proof dish and put barbecue sauce on it and cook for a few minutes so the sauce penetrates the meat and you now have barbecued chicken without the bone and can eat with a fork . But eating chicken off the bone is far from being uncivilized, just take little bits and stick your pinky out and its just like if you were drinking tea. A person would look alot more stupid trying to eat a chicken leg using a knife and fork. and would probably end up with something in their lap. And their is nothing wrong with having a little beast in you . Like they had knives and forks way back when. Being civilized is when you can live in society and get along with others it has nothing to do with how you eat your chicken. If you are trying to be so prim and proper don't worry about eating chicken off the bone first worry about how to spell.

I think there are some factors which would seem uncivilized to me:

1. The meat is still bloody.
2. The meat is chopped up into bite sized chunks, with the bone still inside.
3. Parts I don't eat are served as well - ears, tongue, guts, feet.
4. The animal is serve whole and still alive, cut up and cooked at or near the table.

I know that in some civilized cultures that ears, guts, tongue, feet and stomach as well as intestines are eaten. I know that sometimes the live animal is presented as proof of freshness. I just don't want my food that way.

;-D Luv that Southern Fried Chicken! Now that's civilized!

And howis it more civilized to use a knife to eat the meat or cut it from the bone? My aunt used to feel the same way until my wife showed her how to hold the bone iwth a napkin. It seemed that the idea of touching the food was what got to her most. Once she felt that there was something between her ahnds and the food, she felt much better. But really, why is it more "civilized"? Why care so much about how you eat yor food? Enjoy all the aspects of life.

If you don't like it, don't do it. I see nothing wrong with eating off the bone, it is a waste to leave it and close to the bone are often the best bits of meat.

I think it is really bad the way we sanitise things so much in the world. Lots of children have no idea that meat comes from animals - and the more you reshape them into burgers etc the less likely children are to learn - we shouldn't lie to them about where their food comes from.

I prefer ripping the meat off myself, to eating the chicken meat in some way processed (like in a burger - how much of it do you think is actually chicken?). I do prefer to practise that kind of eating at home, alone or with close family/friends, though. In public, most likely a chicken fillet steak. Grilled. :) Still, the civilised way of eating chicken (and fish) is with your fingers, and not fork + knife. It's etiquette.

I'm sure that you are not the only person, there are probably many more people who share your point of view. However, I don't think that even Miss Manners says that people have to eat a drumstick or a wing with a fork and knife or the cook first has to de-bone those portions before serving them.

You've got to be kidding. I love fried chicken, and I want every little bit I can get of it. I could hardly imagine trying to eat a chicken wing with a knife and fork! It's not as if you're picking up a steak with both hands and giving it a yank!

I love chicken, it really doesnt bother me if its still with the bone, but the thing that is uncivilised is when people eat the bones, its really mind blowing and the sound is disgusting.
