Nasal and bronchial congestion has been pretty heavy for about a week now. Other cold symptoms are long gone, and the congestion is getting better little by little, but altogether pretty slowly. Mucus is opaque white. How long should I wait to try to get over it on my own before going to the doctor for antibiotics?

Depends on your history. If you had it before and it was within a year report immediately. If you have breathing-problems or you increase your self-medication (asthma or the like) also report immediately to your doctor.

If you are not having any further problems up to two weeks is normal. Mucus should be white. Any other color is a problem. I have heard from many people this year it takes most much longer and is also a bigger drain on energy then other occasions they had it.

Are you coughing or wheezing? I wouldn't wait for more than a couple of weeks, unless you are weak, or coughing up blood. This can turn into more very easily. I've had friends who ended up with walking Pneumonia. Be careful and watch your symptoms, if they change drastically, seek a doctor immediately. See the web site below for more info.

You should have gone a week ago. But to ease the symptoms, you could use a vaporizer. Works great for me. But you should still see a doctor. I don't know why people fool around when they're really sick.
