And if this is possible, what routes would you take?
I'd like to find a way to do this using ONLY rails, not connecting buses or cabs, etc.

Thanks.

Yes..(its the only way I go to NYC) At 30th Street, catch the R7 Septa train to Trenton. In Trenton, catch the New Jersey Transit train right to Penn Station in NYC. (These trains are usually waiting when you arrive in Trenton) You can buy your tickets for both at 30th Street and its better to buy them before boarding otherwise there is an extra fee. The worst thing about it is unlike Amtrak it makes all the local stops but schedule wise its minutes behind. The trains are moderately comfortable and clean. But round trip is like $40. Have a safe trip.

Either from Penn Station or from the downtown Wall Street area ( it used to be underneath the World trade Centre before 911) you could take an Amtrak express train to North Philadelphia or to Philadelphia Main Station and back daily. Before 911 it used to stop by the World Trade center, I am not sure if that is so now. It has been a long time. Check with the ticket office in Phily and find out the stops in Manhattan.

OF COURSE- Most travel west or south from NYC goes thru Philadelphia. For example, the trian to DC goes thru Phila. There are diggerent classes fo trains but its a ship trip to Penn Station, on 34th Street and 8th Avenue

By the way the sation n Phila looks just like Grand Central Station in NYC
