long route national passenger rail services through Sheffield are provided by Midland Mainline, Virgin Trains and more local ones by Central Trains, TransPennine Express, and Northern Rail.

Main ones for London are Midland Mainline which goes to and from St Pancras and Virgin Trains which go from Euston.

Fares are a nightmare of different costs depending on day, time of day, if there's an X in the month, etc. However, really cheap deals can be had by booking ahead on certain trains (and it can make a HUGE difference!) especially out of commuter times. Last time I went it cost me about £13 day return on Midland Mainline prebooked leaving Sheffield on a 9:30am train and returning after 8:30pm. The trains are also emptier then and reasonably comfortable, plus you get free coffees etc on Midland Mainline (u may also on Virgin, don't know!)

To get from Heathrow you can use the Heathrow Express which is a short fast link to London Paddington, then use the Underground to get to any other station.

When you get to Sheffield you'll be right next to the main bus station or you can transfer to Supertram depending where you're going. There is also a black cab taxi rank there, which are on meters and won't rip you off.

You'll also maybe find it useful to go onto Sheffield Forum on http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/

You could ask the same question there and get more info or anything about Sheffield.
Enjoy your stay in shiny Sheff and don't worry if the locals call you "luv" even if you're a guy! It doesn't mean anything negative!
