The very first stamps were issued by Great Britain in 1840. When other countries started issuing stamps, it was decided that all the rest had to put their names on their stamps, but Britain could just use the monarch's image as identification to recognize that they were the inventors of the postage stamp. These days most British stamps have a very small silhouette of QE2, often in silver or gold.
