The metro-Detroit area is nice. Housing here is cheaper than in most of the country! You can buy a nice house for $350,000. Good areas to live in include Bloomfield Hills. You do not want to live in the city of Detroit. Novi is an up and coming area. We have the Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings. We also have the world renowned Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The Detroit Institute of Arts is awesome. Ann Arbor is very close to Detroit. If you like water its a great place with lots of lakes. Right now the economy is not very good. Hard to find a job.

We have hot summers (105 today!!) and cold winters (down to below zero in some areas!) now those are extremes, we have the diversity of ever changing seasons, you get everything between those two temps. listed above. We have the availability of some of the largest lakes in the world, clean air, green forests...man I didn't even realize how nice Michigan really is until now. Some of the nicer places to live are the Grand Rapids area, North of Detroit is nice but expensive (Royal Oak, Troy, Farmington Hills, etc.) Cost of living is on par with most of the rest of the country. As for entertainment, it depends on what you enjoy doing, if you are into the great outdoors Northern Michigan will be Heaven to you, if you are into the "party scene" you will definitely want to stay closer to Detroit. I hope this helps!! If you have any other direct questions feel free to email me!!

Like 'Impossible', I am from Monroe originally too. Michigan is a lot better than people make it out to be. I have traveled all over southern Michigan. There are many good places to live. My favorite areas (the nice places to live) are around Royal Oak, Auburn Hills, Bloomfield Hills, West Bloomfield, Canton, Rochester Hills, Troy, or Novi. Most of these places are clustered right next to each other and there is a lot to do in each city so you never get bored like here in Monroe. :-) Everything is very well kept and many new suburbs and buildings going up everywhere still. Other good places to be are Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Lansing, or Kalamazoo. All are busy cities as well but they are more isolated so that is their disadvantage.

I live in Monroe which is about a 1/2 hour south of Detroit. It's not bad. The cost of living isn't too bad but the houses around here are kind of expensive. I like going to Ann Arbor. It's a great town with lots of cool stuff (stores, restaurants, museums, etc). Detroit is pretty cool too. It's nice because I am close to Windsor, Canada and Toledo, Oh. So there is always somewhere fun to go. There isn't much to do in Monroe so I go to another town for things to do.

I dont think Michigan is the greatest place to live. I live in Michigan & Im wondering why I moved back here from Nashville sometimes. There are no jobs available in certain fields. Everyone talks about how "horrid" Detroit is, but its not as bad as people make it out to be. Im not saying its THEE place to live but there are other major cities that are just as bad or worse. I would pick a surrounding city to live in first though.

born and raised in chicago and moved to MI when I was 27. I live near the thumb area in what is considered to most a VERY small city or a larger town right off of Lake Huron. I like it where I'm at, although I am accustomed to and like the extreme seasons we have. The cost of living is very reasonable where I am at, as I believe is in much of the state, and where I am at is a WONDERFUL place to raise a family. AVOID Detroit and Flint, as there is nothing there ...dirty and not exactly safe. Even in their surrounding suburbs, compared to other big cities I have lived in and visited, there isn't alot to offer there. But Grand Rapids is one of the fastest growing areas in the country and I hear it is very nice. Definitely do your research before giving any thought to moving here.

ITHE single ugliest dirtiest place on Earth...and the people are stupid and backwards. It's unbelieveable how wonderful they think that dump is. Not one cent is spent on beautification. I've been to Traverse City, the one bragging point of the entire state. It is so far from civilzation it is of little use to anyone who has to work for a living as it is covered in snow 8 months out of the year. furthermore, all the people in michigan move to "Flaaaarida"..they don't even want to live there...why would you?

www.bestplaces.net is a good place to start. It's got all sorts of statistics on demographics, income, cost of living, et cetera.
You should also start reading local papers for where you're looking to move.
