The northern capital of Vietnam is Hanoi. The southern capital was Saigon but it fell to the north in 1975 after the eruption of a full scale war (1964). After the defeat, it was renamed as Ho Chi Minh City. I don't believe that it retained any type of capital status, though. Hope this helps.
