Television took the place of reading.

(And to some extent, of thinking.)

Because there are so many other means of entertainment...100 years ago we didn't even have T.V., let alone Internet/computers, Movie theaters in every city, video games...etc. the list could go on. I believe that is the main reason for the decline of poetry popularity.

Its because taste has changed and it has always been the case. It is true about prose as well. The style that was popular earlier is not anymore....Music and song are as much a poetic

Not only did TV replace reading, but also people are conditioned to listen to music constantly. Rap music rhymes and it poetic in that sense. Traditional poetry makes a person reflect and requires a certain sensibility that may be lost on modern generations unless a person studies that literary form in school.

Poetry is slow. It is to be read or spoken, slowly. Popular culture is fast, like the edits in TV and Film, like communications through Cell Phone and Internet.

that really depends on what you mean by poetry? Many would argue that rap and rock are forms of poetry and both genres are doing pretty well!

Peoplwer weren't as busy back then, and liked to sit back and relax and read poetry. Now with the TV, we have every image handed to us.

its a computer age...people are moving on in life at a very fast pace... people dont have time for poetry & proses in the times of slangs & short words....

I agree with nickm...He seems to know something on that matter...
TV has replaced a lot of our mind-thinking...I used to write poetry, and it has totally disappeared from my mind...
