The closest book I can think of to "Les Miserables" is "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. That one is set during the French Revolution and is an awesome story, even if you don't normally like Dickens.

Other good ones I've recently read or reread:
"The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck
"The Short Day Dying" by Peter Hobbs
"Widow of the South" by Robert Hicks

The Way the Crow Flies by Ann-Marie MacDonald

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

What You Owe Me by Bebe Moore Campbell

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (more uplifting ending, but great character portrayal on humans and what they are capable of - not in a good way)

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
