It's a reasonable question to ask, don't think otherwise. Technology is advancing at such a pace these days that things are obsolete before they ever hit the store shelves!

As you've probably gathered from the previous responses, an iPod is an mp3 player, but it is also quite a bit more than that. While any mp3 player can do just that - play the ".mp3" digital song file format - Apple's iPod is also allows you to sort and maintain your song library using the iTunes software (which comes with the iPod) and downloads right onto your computer. Coupled with the iTunes website, you are then able to purchase music online at 99-cents per song if you so choose (but iTunes will also work just fine with the existing songs you may have.

To top it all off, the iPod is now video-capable. Meaning that you can load movies or video streams into your iPod and play them at your leisure. Since the basic iPod has a 30 GigaBit memory size (meaning it can hold 30 billion pieces of information), and the standard 2-hour movie is only about a 700 MegaBit file size (700 million pieces of information), you can conceivably have all your songs *and* several movies available for your entertainment!

So what it basically boils down to is this: all iPods are mp3 players, while not all mp3 players are up to the iPod calibre.

well ipods are mp3 players but... they are not good, they are a rip off and have medicore audio qualtiy for there price. on the ohter hand thety are very pretty, but the creative zen vision m is like 200% better. yes it is people. the ipoop is poop. im serious. it has 62k colors while the vision m has 262k. creative has more experience with audio and media players. they have there sound cards and speakers to back em up.apple makes nice laptops i agree i like em. but the ipods ar e not good. they are overrated. and for all you ipod lover before u say something like " the ipod is king" or "the ipod is the best" ur wrong. yup you are. get your facts straight before you say something like that. camapre specs before. the samsung players are also very attractive and are better than the ipod. they are in my opinion at the top with creative. sure ipods own 70% of the market. but as soon as people see that the ipod is poop. they will leave it for something bette. like iriver or creative or samsung.also the vision m has 4 hour video life and 15 hr music life. also the screen set at 50% beets the ipods screen that set at 100%. lol true.ipods last average about 1 year. the hard drive fails or the batterys dead. yah people that sure is "a quality product that is the best"SO... NOW BEFORE u say something like the above like that the ipod is best. no ur wrong get ur damn facts straight. ur on my nerves. test a smasun or creativ eplayer against the ipod video together. ull see the and feel and hear the difference. even my creative zen sleek photo without video is better that the ipod video.

Ucan not click and drag your music files to an ipod like u can with a mp3 player...u have to "sync" your music files to your ipod using real player 10, windows media, itunes or some other ipod compatiable software.
Ipods can be hacked and new softwsre ie linux can be run on the device...which can be a major benefit because you can an array of games on the ipod like tetris, doom etc...u can not have a mp3 player.

Well, an iPod IS an MP3 player - it stores and plays music files encoded in MP3 format (as well as AAC formats). The term iPod is a trademark branded name by Apple Computers.

The iPod however, does more than music - it can store any type of file, you can view pictures, videos, etc, as well as play games, maintain contacts, and has a lot more functionality than a generic MP3 player.

Hope that helps

There really is no difference. An Ipod is an mp3 player. IPOD is a brandname. There's loads of mp3 players around depending on your requirement & budget. They come with many functions as well.. FM radio, stored pictures etc etc.. There's Creative, there's iRiver.. just look around & take your pick. Have fun!!

iPods are a form of an MP3 player that not only support MP3 files but Apple's AAC audio files as well. Those will not support Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. On the flip side of that, other brands of MP3 players (SanDisk, Creative Zen, iRiver, RCA, etc.) will support MP3, WMA and Protected WMA files but won't play Apple's AAC files.

Which one do you get? It depends on where you get your music. iTunes files will only play on iPods, other brands will play the WMA files that you get from Napster, Musicmatch, FYE, Wal-mart, and others.

Stay away from Limewire - that's how Napster got into trouble in the beginning.
