please don't do it yourself. I had it done professionally and it didn't even bleed. They know what they are doing, and it will be well worth the wait. If it is done correctly, it won't hurt as much and the scar won't be as bad. mine looks like a small blackhead. and if you are getting the labret, it can be 14g or 16g. the side is usually 16g.

Do NOT pierce yourself. No amount of soaking a needle in alcohol or burning over a lighter is going to effectively sterilize it. You will run the risk of becoming infected, and if that is not taken care of, you will run the risk of gangrene, and the doctor bills from that is FAR larger than the bill of a professional piercer. On top of that, think of the horrid scarring and/or rot from such an infection.

If you don't pierce yourself accurately, you will wind up with a crooked piercing you won't be happy with. Worse yet, you could improperly pierce it, striking a vein/capillary, and cause excessive bleeding, or even worse, cause permanent internal and external scarring. You also run the risk of missing whatever you plan to catch the needle with, and strike your teeth or gums (and dental fees from having a chipped tooth/pierced dental nerve are by no means cheap).

Waiting less than 6 months, and having it done by a professional piercer will ensure your piercing to be free from infection, look nice, and $50 at most is far cheaper than $5000 from dental/medical work from a piercing gone horribly wrong.

You've waited 17 and a half years for this piercing, you can wait another 6 months and have it done right. Or you can do it now, and run the risk of living another 80 years with half a lip.

Don't do it yourself. You might hurt yourself or so. Just be patient.
