The old man is Raoul, at the end he visits christines grave, the rose is to show that the Phantom survived and still is in love with Christine.

Do you recall the scene in the beginning, where the 'old man' is at the auction bidding on the monkey music box? The black-and-white scenes take place many years after the color scenes.
If you listen to the words, you'll figure out that the old man is Raoul (Christine's love).
At the end, when Phantom lets Christine go, he's outrunning an angry mob, and no one really knows what happens to him. The rose and ring were signs that not only is he still alive, he never stopped loving her.

No, it's not the phantom. It's Raoul. The rest of these answers are right. I loved that movie! It was so good! So, the phantom was still in love with Christine!

the old man in the film is d viscount or raoul. he is narating d story as seen thru his eyes n wht christine dae told him. so some bits r confusing cuz it's fr raoul's memory, not any1 else's.
d rose in a black ribbon is symbolic.it's d one d phantom wanted to give 2 christine.i alwiz thought tht christine would outlive raoul, but she didn't.n d phantom never died.he n raoul r still competing for her affections in d afterlive. it seems d phantom thinks raoul has won round 1 only.

i became VERY fortunate to have seen Phantom Of The Opera on the Majestic Theater on Broadway (NYC) April 27, 2006. i'm often no longer a huge fan of opera, yet this became super! It became an remarkable production! i in my opinion enjoyed it and could continually remember about the journey! It gave me chills! "The song Of The night" became my well-liked song.

well i am such an avid watcher of phantom and i know every word i swear remember though that the phantom couldn't go out in public cause of his face and all well people would basically point and laugh or treat him like a fool poor guy neways that was Christina's husband she at that point had recently died and well he was going to visit her well you do remember that she was going to marry Raoul so that my friend is Raoul as an older man. so i hope that all helped your question
