I too loved this movie. It's called Laputa: The Flying Island. It's very early manga and I know you can download it off the net, but unsure where. Hope this helps!!

The only one I remember was in the early eighties, probably on channel4, it was called 'skywhales'. There was no dialogue in it. They hunted skywhales in flying boats powered by pedaling. they harpooned one, towed it back to their island and had a feast. Then one of the older residents (they had strange double mohican hairstyles and almond shaped eyes) went into a trance, it's eyes turned dark and it walked to a hut in the middle of the island. In the centre there was a well type structure. It dropped into it and was wrapped in bandages as it fell... It fell right out of the bottom of the island in the sky and was reborn as a baby skywhale.
It was quite beautiful.
i have been trying to find it for years, this is the first reference I have seen for it, so perhaps we both had the same dream

Yep, sounds like Laputa – Castle In the Sky. A superb film that's available on DVD and well worth getting.

There's a floating island in Gulliver's Travels, could it be a cartoon version of that?
