This is more complicated than the other answers realize. You could compromise your security if you do not do proper configuration with your "remote access" on the system you wish to connect to remotely. There are other issues as well which have to do with what type of connection you are using, wired vrs. wireless, if you wish to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) which allows remote access to a computer. The wiresless connection may need configuration to allow remote access, the system you wish to remotely connect to needs configuration as well. Firewalls can interfere with this process and will need proper configuration too. All these settings should be disabled after you utilize them for maximum security when finished with the remote connection.

This is not an easy item to desribe here. I do not know what your current level of computer technical experiance is, so I don't know what it is you would need desribed and if you have a low level of knowlege it would be most difficult to give you all the various information you will require.

I strongly suggest you discuss this with somebody who has a higher level of experiance than you have. Do you have a family member or friend or coworker who could assist you? That would be the best senerio.

Just downloading a software program will not get this done. It would require a fully outfitted program which had detailed instructions on use. Then you would still need to look at your network and see if the router and firewall needs configuring, if the system needs configuring to allow the remote connection, and the ports needed to open temporarily to accomplish your needs.

If you do not have any of the people I mentioned above to assist you I suggest you purchase a book called "Windows XP---Inside Out. It costs about fifty dollars but is well worth the expense as it is chalk full of great information from troubleshooting, to upgrading, clean installs, basic windows features and how to properly utilize them, networking, remote access and so much more. It is about five inches thick, but has easy to access material. Just go to the back of the book and look in the index for you issue. It also provides URLs to further detailed information you can access on the web. There is a CD which not only contains the entire book in ebook form, but extra tools, registry keys, etc. While this issue is covered in some depth, it is a gold field of informaition any can easily follow.

Another book which is vastly informative is "Absolutely Beginner's Guide to Home Networking" by Mark Edward Soper. This book is easy to read and understand and provides nearly everything anybody needs for home networking and has a section of remote access.

I am sorry this issue is too large to explain fully here at answers. It is just so varied depending on different hardware, software, configuration, etc, to enable one to put it all here. There is a lot of great resourses via individuals you may know and books which will help explain it all if you lack people who can assist.

Good luck finding what you need to do this huge project you have in mind. Once you set this up and do it once it will be a snap after that.

p.s. Stay away from Noton and Symantic if at all possible. These two companys are basically the same and they act like parasites once on a system, nearly impossible to get them out once in unless you get a special clean up tool from Norton or Symantic. They have really poor business practices and have stooped so low as to infect computers like a virus does. They are now selling software for pennies on the dollar of what they use to charge due to consumers catching on to how horrid they are and utilizing their special clean up tool to get rid of their software. Please be carefull if you do choose to use their software. There is a lot of great software by other manufacturers.
