kngihts are the protectors of a certain land governed by a lord. in return for the knights service, the lord rewards the knights with fief. a fief is a piece of land where the knight resides and earns income. people are still being kngihted today because it is a sign of honor and being a member of the elite class.

Knights were the elite fighters under the king. They were usually noble-born. They were like the commandos of the middle ages, with their horses and armor. Most footsoldiers did not have armor, and rarely had the type of weaponry the knights had. Knights were expected to be especially loyal to the king, and were usually landowners.
The reason some are knighted now is to show that they have acted with honor, and that they are part of an elite group, just like the knights of old.

Knights were in charge of keeping peace in the various territories of the King and other nobles. Their other use was in war, the knights were required to fight for their king when he needed them in war.

Nowadays it is a great honour to be knighted, a reward for special deeds.

Knights were the orginal mercenaries or hitmen. They killed for whoever paid for them. People still get knighted so the rest of us know who to avoid.
