You don't even need a case. You can get a kit that has 2 cables: a power adapter that lets you plug the HD in and an adapter cable that converts the IDE to USB. I bought one from Newegg. This makes portability very easy with various drives/computers.

Purchase a hard drive case that converts internals to externals. Normally they link up to your computer via USB or Firewire. Try to purchase a known brand and personally I would stay away from the SmartDrive product...WinXP Pro seems to have a bit of difficulty adapting to it...I have mine working but it took a few hours to finally grab my husband's tech brain to determine that the cable that came with the drive was damaged. No instructions and the CD was literally useless.

You get what you pay for :) Good luck

You can buy a case that will convert an internal hard drive to an external. They're $15-20 at geeks.com - make sure you get the right one for your hard drive, because there are different kinds.
