I'm not in the industry, but I'm an aspiring make-up artist and I've asked many people in the business their advice. You don't have to have a degree in it, but it helps. If not, just make sure you read a lot of books such as the Kevin Aucoin ones and go to make-up counters in the mall or the MAC store. Also make a portfolio of your work and make sure to bring it when you visit any place that would have a potential job offer.

Don't overdo your make up! Some make up laies really overdo their make up and because of this I won't ask for their advice. Remeber your own make up will be kind of an advertisement for your skills.
Always listen to what your customers want and pay attention to them!
I'm not in the industry, just a potential customer but good luck!

I used to work in local commerical production. Get some business cards and photos of your work printed up, then send those to production companies in your area. Usually if you charge a competitive day rate they will try you out instead of paying a bunch of money for someone else.
Good luck!

I would get the book "Making Faces" by Kevyn Aucoin. He was a leader in this field and it is the best "how to" out there.
You can see some of his work at
http://www.kevynaucoin.com
Of course he's passed away but his company is going on.

esthetics schooling might help.
it's not really a school. more like classes at a school.
most places you don't a license - just a certificate.
u.s.a. is trying to get it under nurses licensing within the next 3-5 years so go to school for it now and be 'grandfathered' in.
