You need to get yourself a router ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Router ) to handle the incoming connection before it's sent to the local network.
The two common solutions to sharing an internet connection is to use either a hardware router like above or a computer running routing software, like Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP. The latter requires a computer to act as a gateway for the other computers, meaning that it needs to be on all the time to facilitate a permanent connection to the other computers.

There are two ways: buy a router, or put a second network card in the computer with the broadband connection and use it as a server to share the connection with the other computers.
There's no way to do it without either a router or a computer with two network cards to act as the server. Search Microsoft's site for "Internet Connection Sharing" to learn more about this subject.

if it is a DSL connection or a W/LAN connection, you can share it using a Switch.
It is not complecated at all .
Incase of a DSL connection, plug the RJ45 connector ( which connect your computer to the DSL router ) into any port of the router or Switch and connect your computers to the router..

connect the isp line to port one of the switch. Connect other computers to the various other ports. in the tools option use dhcp for configuration. auto address auto everything and no domain. the comps will connect by themselves. you can also create a workgroup amongst the comps. No neew for a server. Caution: does not work if you have dial up. then you have to use one comp as the server. Connect the LAN card to port one and other comps to the other ports and configure with ip addressing protocols.
i am currently running 35 comps this way using a 512 kbps DSL line

once you say "swap" do you recommend a mechanical swap or a community swap (AKA smart hub)? A community swap is a small container with numerous Ethernet jacks. you are able to have the capacity to percentage a broadband connection by this kind of. I do. basically plug the WAN port of the swap into the broadband modem, and the pcs into the different ports.
