Bit is an abbreviation for 'binary digit' and it is storage space for a 0 or a 1. Putting 8 bits together is called a Byte and it can store 2^8 different numbers.
Longer and longer strings of 'bits' are put together to represent more and more complicated things. Depending upon if the memory location has been told it is storing a string or any one of several different types of numbers, the computer interprets the strings of bits differently. It may see 0000 0011 in a string space and think that it is storing the letter 'c'. If it had been told that the space contained an integer, it would think it was storing the number 3.

bit can be referred to as a drill bit, but it can also refer to computer arithmetic
bit has a single value, 0 or 1
nibble (nybble) has 4 bits values 0 to 15 ( or 16 values, or hexadecimal also 4 bits )
byte has 8 bits values 0 to 255 ( 256 values )( or two nibbles, 8 bits)
