Karate and Kung Fu are no match for a gun. If you strolled up in the ghetto karate-chopping people, you'd end up in a body bag.

They are useful for fitness reasons.. however for fighting reasons, no.. most people who know martial arts end up in more fights because they are always looking for fights or suspecting others!
People who don't think about fights, never get into street fights and move away from dangerous situations easily.

I once dated a Mormon guy who told me he had had a very violent temper, and he studied Karate, and got a black belt, and it had the effect of losing his violent temper. He said it just calmed him down, so that he never had it anymore.
I think that's pretty useful.
