Your processor may be the problem. See if you have a celeron, it's the cheaper form of the pentium. To increase the processing on your computer upgrade your ram and your processor. Get something with a good front side bus (the size of the mouth). You can have a 2.3 ghz processor but if the front side bus is small then the information isn't going to get to the processor for processing as fast as a chip with a larger fsb.

A good combination of Motherboard, processor, cache and RAM are required too apart from Hard disk to run computer faster.
Follow these-
-Never delete a program, always uninstall it
-Defragment the Hard disk as and when required
-Uninstall those programs which are not required
-Sometimes high tempreture slowed down, try to keep your computer cool
-Do not install any spyware or antivirus for the sake, use the authentic one from big brands

Try more memory. Also check how recent your graphic card is (the best PC on the planet will run poorly with an older graphic card). Otherwise, use something like Startup Manager to switch off any background programs that aren't needed when your machine boots up

go to your start menu and select run and type msconfig

un check any options in Startup for programs you don't really need.

A good way to speed up a PC is also getting more memory especially if you have Win XP as it eats ram. I recomend a minimum of 512 ram but a gig will really help.

Upgrade your motherboard and install one of the new dual CPU.

Install at least 1GB memory.

Defragment the hard drive whenever necessary. Windows XP will indicate this when you do try a defragmentation.

Uninstall redundant programs.
