First, I need to tell you that body organs function because of a number of stimulation.

As in the stomach, it's activity can increase because of:
1. It's time for you to eat
2. looking at some delicious food
3. Smelling a delicious smell
4. etc.

In cases like that, your gastric acid will flow more than when it is idle state. But there was no food to digest.

So, the growling sound you hear is the gastric acid reaction inside your stomach.
