Of course military planes and bombs pollute the environment, as do trucks, trains, and all other vehicles. Along with factory emmisions and garbage dumps.
It's all part of the human living condition. They are telling us to try to do less of it. Be more conscious of what we do.
Obviously we have not yet become civilized enough to avoid war. People are still filled with ego - wanting power, wealth, control, superiority. Until people recognize their spirituality and make changes along these lines, we will never get along well enough to avoid war.
On the plus side, the internet has allowed different cultures to talk and become friendly.....to understand each other and 'want' to get along. That seems to me a huge step in the process of oneness (unity)

I don't really understand the last paragraph - do you mean if we are civilized we should be able to dismantle the national war machine? If so then no chance, because civilization is just to diverse and conflicted for this ever to happen.
I think industry is the major polluter, way ahead of the military - just look at what is going on in China. That makes installing environmentally friendly light bulbs in your house seem as effective as **** on a fish.
Governments find it a lot easier to harass and guilt trip the general public, we may be the voters but the big businesses bankroll governments and they will always be kept sweet to the detriment of the environment (see the U.S gov's attitude to the Kyoto treaty)

Well, some things that the goverment uses arent' exactly the cleanest running units out there...however, there are some things being developed, in the navy for example, that are starting to make some improvements.
They have a ship, that propels itself, via hydraulics, and changing of the nozzle assembly, can actually turn sideways in the water, and acts as a refueling station for helicopters.
Tanks, have always been a bit clunky, oil dripping, and then there's the question of uranium depleted rounds all over Iraq.
The biggest problem, is that armies, worldwide, will always be around, either in the form of military, or police units, as long as someone wants to try and break the law. Thus, getting rid of all the military, army system, and their machines, you'd still have problems to iron out....plus, some of the stuff we've got now, like nuclear waste, will be around long after we're all dead. Unless we shoot it into the sun.

Yes, definetely. Think of your car exhaust, now multiply that a few times to get the effect of an airplane. The burn lots more fuel than motor vehicles. Bombs also pollute the environment - and I'm not talking about nukes either, they are even worse! Think of the smoke, chemicals etc. that are released by a bomb exploding...

You are right. A perfect world would have peace and a clean environment, unfortunately this world is not a peaceful one and never will be so I think the environment is doomed. Even if the warfare would stop we would still be trying to get into space and I doubt if that is beneficial to the environment ( have you ever seen a space launch?)
To balance the pessimism of this answer I would like to point out that materials are being developed to make our cars etc "greener", let's hope they make the war machines "green" too!

Cars and industry are the main source of pollution. The military do some damage but not as much as you might think.

We bomb at night, not at the peak of the ozone alert during the day. LOL. War will never be completely unavoidable in this age. There's always some nut job that leaves us with no choice.
