My best mate is coming to ibiza with me in 2 weeks, and she's worried she wont be able to do the seatbelt up in the plane and will have to ask for an extension, which she would find mortifying. Neither of us have flown before so im no help to her at all. She is a size 22-24, anyone have anything HELPFUL to say?

We are flying with spanair, i tried their website and there's no information on seat configuration, widths, or seatbelts. She has no problem using car seatbelts, or sitting in seats at the cinema. but we've been told airplaine seats are narrower, and seatbelts are shorter than in cars.

tell your friend not to worry - my sister is about a twenty and there was ltst of room. I am a 28 and needed an extension (but only just) and I was mortified so I know how she feelsesepcially since was bright orange!! I was a 24-26 several years ago and did not need an extensio n I think she will be fine, but if she does have to ask they were quite discreet about it. I feel so much for her form personal experience I was worried my bum would get stuck in the seat and it didnt. On one flight I went on to glasgow for work I pretended to have the belt done up under my tummy so i wouldnt have to ask - I definatelly dont recommend this!
Just make sure you both have a fabulous time and take her mind off it by dragging her around duty free!!!!

The seat width on all Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air aircraft (armrest to armrest) is approximately 17 inches and the seatbelt length is 46 inches. Passengers needing extra coverage may ask the flight attendant for a seatbelt extension, which adds 25 inches to the seatbelt length for a total of 71 inches. However, seatbelt extensions are not allowed in exit row seats.
I just now noticed that you said you two have never flown... tell her it isn't that big of a deal... when she boards, just to whisper to a stewardess for an extension and if she needs it she can use it. Nobody notices that stuff... everyone is too busy getting their stuff put away and even if she was holding an extension they wouldn’t know what it was in the first place.
Just avoid the "exit" seats. They always want someone physically fit, young and healthy there in the event there is a problem and the guy will need to get the exit door open. I remember a lady had one arm sitting on an exit row and they asked her to move. I'm sure that was a little embarrassing for her but only the people nearby noticed.
BTW, if there are three seats next to each other and the middle seat is vacant you can usually lift the arm rests up and out of the way to give you a little extra width. That's if your lucky and the flight is not packed.

She will need to purchase 2 seats if she is too wide, otherwise the airline may deny boarding due to having to sit on person next to her, squashing her. If you are going on an aircraft with 3 by 3 seats configuration, ask for aisle seats (2 adjacent), she can get out better and can place her bum more towards the aisle. The crew won't find t comfortable to walk past her, but hey. Whereas for extension belt, she might just fit into the standard one.
You can try to ask for a middle seat and an aisle if you don't mind getting a bit squashed, providing there is a single person travelling and the window seat has been taken. (window seats can't be left unoccupied). If you are going on a 2/4/2 seat config plane, thats easy, sit by the window and aisle. Hope this helps. Where are you flying from, and with which airline, I might be able to help with seat arrangements?

She should be fine, I last flew in/out of Spain on Easyjet last October, I was bigger then, size 24/26 and the standard seatbelt was fine, all was OK. They do have extensions available but I have never needed to ask for one. If she did need to ask for an extension, she can call the flight attendant and they are not going to be shouting it out, but will simply bring her one, she has nothing to worry about

The best thing to do is check with the airline or go on their website. You will at least be able to find the pitch of the seat. Which is the measurement of the back of your seat to the back of the seat in forn of you. It is usually about 30"

Ask the airline, ahead of time, that should remove any embarassing moments. Although I doubt if any of the other people on the people would notice if she did have problems and if they did notice I don't think they would stare or be rude about it.
From my experience they are like car seat belts except a bit longer.

It always depends. In first class, you have lots of room. But in economy, it is a little cramped. the seat belts are adjustable. And they go big. Also the seats are fairly wide.
