My pool is about 20 years old and is plumbed with pvc. Unfortunately over the last six year drought the clay soil has pulled away from the plumbing and there is a leak(prettybad) by the skimmer. I that isn't hard enough to keep it primed and running the skimmer side of the pool is now 4" higher than the other end (no cracks in the gunnite shell). I need to know exactly what the holes in the skimmer are for. I know one goes directly to the filter and sucks but the other one is for what? And I have a drain cover at the bottom that a former pool guy said not to let leaves build up on but where does it go? Theres no drain mechanism. I have located the leak and know that I or someone tougher than I am will have to dig and replace pvc but I have to create a deeper skimmer hole as I certainly can't "raise or lower the shell".

This is a tough question, with no easy answer. Over the years I have seen many pools go out of level. Put quite a few back in level, too. But all the solutions are quite costly. And each pool should be approached differently. Some can be mud-jacked back to level. But be prepared for the shell to crack- which can also be fixed. Others are re-leveled simply by removing the deck and re-tiling the pool. Or a new shell can be built inside the old one. There are other options as well. But the pool needs to be evaluated before a decision can be made on which method is best. Can tell you this much, however. Get ready to start finding cracks in the pool. All that water is leaking under the pool shell. This will cause all sorts of things to happen, none of which are good.
By the way,the front hole in the skimmer goes down the wall to the main drain. Uses indirect suction to operate. Wish I had better news for you. But there simply aren't any cheap fixes to this problem.

The hole furthest from the pool is your skimmer line, the front hole ( closest the pool ) is the equalizer line, just passive suction going down to the side hole in your main drain. There will be another hole in the main drain that OUGHT to contain what's called a hydrostatic valve. It's a one way valve that lets in gorund water when it's pressure exceeds that of the level of the water in the pool. Stops your pool from floating out of the ground. Sounds like yours isn't there or not working.
Your lopsided pool can be addressed many ways. It all depends on how much you want to spend. I've seen pools that were leveled, only to turn out to be a Pandora's box full of surprises, costing more than hammering out the pool and building a new one.I've also seen people go the cheaper route and leave the level as is, and cut a new skimmer in the side that's got the highest water level. Fine if you don't care that you still have a lop sided pool. The cheapest anyone has gone, has been to simply run an over deck line from the back hole of the skimmer (if it's threaded, some aren't and assuming it's not a brass skimmer, but PVC), down into the pool. You don't have skimming anymore, it's not permanent, but keeps your circulating going and no worries on the pump running dry. Good luck
