Good morning or good afternoon, how may I help you today...
If the guest is expected at a particular time say "please have a seat in the reception area (gesture where that is) and (so and so) will be with you momentarily"
If the guest is unexpected say "please have a seat while I try to locate (so and so for you) that gets them out of your face while you place the call. And then be sure to give the visitor the message as to how long the wait will be or if the the person is unavailable at the time. Ask them if they would like to leave a message if the person can't see them.

Sir or ma-am I really am not the person to answer that question however if you'll please have a seat I will see to it that we get that question answered for you. Polite and direct do not be afraid to admit you don't know something, reassure the customer that you will find the answer for them. Then go consult with your colleagues and get them that answer.

Well what I usually do is tell them, "I do not have the answer to your question at the moment, but please take a seat while I look for the answer or find someone who can answer your question for you?"
Lead or show them the resting or waiting area and then proceed to find someone to help you or look for the answer yourself if you know where to find it.

the main thing is to have confidence, make them think you know what's going on, then ask, very politely, that they take a seat and someone will be with them shortly.

we are programmed to respond to infants. infants have massive around heads for the dimensions of their bodies, and massive eyes for the dimensions of their heads. doggies have rounded heads and massive eyes, so we respond by using taking good care of them. We strengthen a dating and that they strengthen up into canines that we nevertheless respond to. actually maximum animals and birds have this innate reaction, and their yopung are born with comparable proportions. Thats why Tweety Pie and sketch animals are lovable.

What kind of questions are they asking?
"I need to see Mr. Smith."
"He's on the phone right now. If you will take a seat, I will buzz him for you."
