In New York, try looking around the good residential areas at the end of the month, beginning of the next month when people move. They will leave good stuff for the trash because it doesn't fit where they are moving. Often they think it will fit, then can't get it up the stairs or in the elevator, and abandon it on the curb. This week is probably a good one for that, if you go out right away.
Also, hit the Salvation Army/Good Will/thrift stores, this month. Next month, and in September, every college kid in NYC will be looking for stuff.
Ebay is good too. There are usuallly lots of people in the NYC area with used furniture on ebay.
IKEA sells good new furniture, inexpensively. So does Target.

Estate sales, yard sales, flea markets, antique malls, classified ads, Goodwill Industries, St Vincent DePaul Society, and others are all good sources off both cheap, and sometimes free, furniture. Give them all a try and I'm sure you will find what you need.
Good luck with your move.

Some people leave good furniture out for the garbage man because they're tired of it and bought new.
Find the cheap shops.

If you have a car, go to IKEA or Macy's Clearance Center.

My first thought was IKEA also. I love their stuff, and you can't beat the prices. You might also check eBay; you never know what you'll find there.
