The contact between cultures with differing technologies has historically led to conflict followed by very dramatic changes eg change of economy, loss of resources, slavery, loss of identity, adoption of new religion. So what would happen to people on this world if we suddenly came into contact with a race from another world? Would there be any benefit at all to us from such an incident taking place?

If an extra-terrestrial intellingence publically visited Earth, it would be a great shock to humans...especially in the area of religions, central goverments and human thinking in general.
I don't believe we could see such an event as possible, because such a race would have to be so advanced that they would realise their visit would cause chaos to our fragile and still largely primitive society; but if it did happen, the events would be of such magnitude that we could not speak from the viewpoint of benefit to ourselves...Our world, as we know it and look at it, would come to an end and we would have to adjust to a new way of looking at ourselves in relation to the universe. Any technological or other advance due to such a visit would be of minimal importance in the initial stage, as we would have to evolve at a pace we have not yet proved we can, before we can adjust, cope and absorb the pros and cons of the new situation.

I can't help but feel that science fiction has already addressed this issue well. The movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was excellent. The alien brought a gift, which we shot out of his hand and destroyed. He asked to speak with all leaders at once, and they all refused unless he came to them. He asked to speak to the UN, but they could not agree. Great stuff.
I read a short story about two years ago in which we intercepted a transmission from another civilization. At first, everyone was excited. Then, when the transmissin was translated, we realized that it was a continous religious broadcast. Sort of like the 700 club and the church shows on Sunday morning. After we realized what the broadcast was, no one cared anymore.
I personally think, however, that a contact with extraterrestrials today, in real life, would be a very touch and go thing. They would not contact us unless they wanted something from us, or if they wanted to enlighten us...which were the principle reasons for exploration and conquest during the 15th century forward. I am not sure what would come of it, as we would probably approach them with open arms, and with guns at the ready.

Our governments promote contact with extra-terrestrials. Information was sent out on Voyager etc. So that we could be found if any aliens should happen with the craft. They show symbols of peace.
So what will our governments do if they should arrive.
I'll tell you.
They will shoot them down. Shove any live samples in laboratories and monitor them until death. They will dissect all the dead.
Alongside this they will examine their craft and try to steal its technology for personal uses.
Given the probability that interstellar aliens are of a higher intelligence. They might already know this sort of behaviour from a race that is primitive to them (ie. Us).
If you were them. Would you attempt contact?

A very wise man said, When scientific proof contradicts religious teachings, then the religious teachings must be abandoned. Truth is more important than dogma.
The results of ET contact would depend on the wisdom of the person who is thinking about it. The more conservative the person, the more problems he would have about changing his beliefs.
The greatest benefit would be to the people who quit believing in things that would be proved false by ET contact.
Religions which teach that they are the center of the universe would have a lot of followers who abandon that religion.
Scientists who believe that faster than light travel is impossible would have to re evaluate their understanding of physics and start researching new ideas.
In any case, a new era of discovery would follow.

I don't think it would lead to conflict unless our leaders who talks to them are stupid. Loss of resources would be the most scariest but if we trade off for something that can save humanity from our own doing then I think its worth the risk.

I have a friend who shall remain nameless due to the fact he works in Military Intelligence. I was talking to him about if and when they come to earth etc. etc. His reply came as quite a shock. "they're already here". No ammount of persuassion by me would get him to contiue the discussion.
This story can be confirmed by others.

It depends on their scale of brain compared 2 ours, If they belong 2 a scale upper than our brain, then u should stop our contact with them because another creature with a brain scale more than us might do da same thing as we do 2 a ginny pig in our lab, they might be dangerous for us, but if their scale reading is equal 2 us or below us then we might be benifitted, but that depend on their mentality.
