The contact between cultures with differing technologies has historically led to conflict followed by very dramatic changes eg change of economy, loss of resources, slavery, loss of identity, adoption of new religion. So what would happen to people on this world if we suddenly came into contact with a race from another world? Would there be any benefit at all to us from such an incident taking place?

More than likely the benefits would be enormous for humankind as far as technology that would probably lead us to medical cures that otherwise could take how long to figure out or ways to generate energy that would end tapping earths finite resources and such, however it would almost certainly lead to the collapse of a lot of society as we know it today. A lot of religions would fall as well as governments which were founded on religion or which rule by religion. When this contact occurs ( and it will, eventually ) you can bet all he!! will break loose.

The answer depends on whether the ET's have oil or not.

We would most likely approach this race with suspicion and greed. That's what animals do, it's a way of protecting ourselves and our trusted tribes. There's no shared experience or trust established, so we err on the side of self-protection.

They would be far too intelligent to contact a potential threat. The logical thing for them to do (like it or not) would be to eradicate us so as to eliminate any future threat that we would pose. The fact that we still exist shows that we have either not been discovered, or have been discovered and have little time before we are eradicated.

Just think how amusing it would be if the Extra Terrestrials decided to contact the French, the Nigerians or the Australians as their first point of contact! ( instead of you-know-who)......

it would depend on the intention of the other society. if they were seeking to enlighten, then they would share technology and help us further our own society in exchance for having us as an ally. if they sought to conquer us, we'd probably be screwed. our whole world will struggle to unite against global conquest. unless of course there's soccer involved. we all unite for soccer.

it would hopefully unite the world. we would finally realize that we do have something in common. humanity. and for the sake and preservation of it, it would be best to be as one. i like to believe that it would be beneficial.
